Route Description

Lough Navar Forest is part of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark. Lough Navar Forest is a spectacular forest, rich in natural and historical antiquities extending across 2,600 hectares of bog, heath, open water, native woodland and coniferous forest. The forest is owned by the Forest Service of Northern Ireland and some parts of the forest were planted as early as 1946 for timber production. The expanses of open water and the rugged landscape lends itself effortlessly to an array of water and land based activities Therefore it is hardly surprising that this forest is a mecca for walkers, fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts. A path has been provided which circles this pleasant lake and offers views across the lake and its surrounding rugged hills. The sheltered location of the lake and fringing woodland with its abundance of food make the area a popular haven for birds, otters, ducks, swans, foxes, deer, hares etc which can often be spotted feeding, nesting or rearing their young in the area all year round. On the western end of Lough Achork the path crosses the Sillees River. The Sillees River flows from its source, near Lough Achork, to its mouth, where it joins Lough Erne south of Enniskillen. It flows for 56 km (35 miles) through mostly coniferous forests and agricultural land before reaching Enniskillen. The river flows through four Loughs along its course, among them is Lough Achork. These Loughs act as storage areas for large amounts of water and their ability to rise and fall with the river helps reduce the risk of flash flooding lower down the river’s course, for example in Enniskillen. This walk is situated in a working forest environment and may be subject to temporary diversion and closure. In such circumstances, please ensure that all safety signage is complied with. All Forest Service woodlands are sustainably managed and certified against international standards that demonstrate good environmental, social and economic principles.
